My thoughts on Koons' work as a whole; Absurd. It is not some sort of absurd genius but disturbingly absurd. His well known ballon animal sculptures I find to be somewhat amusing, at best. The way this giant blue dog sits upon a platform (currently at LACMA) is almost laughable. It is as if this sculpture is too precious to touch the floor, although, I can admit he has impeccable execution, a small token of life long waste.
Most of Koons' work I find frustratingly annoying; An inflatable caterpillar stuffed in between a metal foldable ladder. Maybe the idea was the contrast between the icy, industrial silver ladder and the colorful, cheerful 'toy'. Either way, I do not understand nor can I fathom any deeper meaning. Maybe it is supposed to be humorous which could soften the blow of how ridiculous I think this nonsense is but nonetheless, I had the urge to kick over the silly interpretation of art. One word: Kitsch.
